“Art will disappear as life becomes more balanced. We will no longer need paintings and sculptures, for we will be living amidst the art that has been created.” Mondrian
The passenger building at Saint-Ouen station covers an area of 36m by 28m and houses the RATP (Line 14) and SNCF (RER C) facilities. The roof, inspired by Mondrian’s paintings, consists of prefabricated panels with glass blocks resting on a grid of concrete beams. The glass blocks reference François Hennebique’s “translucent concrete”. The grid of beams is supported by steel columns incorporating smoke extraction vents.
The façade consists of glazing fixed with glazing beads on three sides. The glass elements, 4m high, are glazed onto steel stiffeners embedded at the base on a 2m grid.
The direct exit, a 14m by 7m kiosk covering the vertical circulation routes connecting the forecourt directly to the RER C, echoes the design of the Bâtiment Voyageur.
